Guy de Maupassant is renowned as one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protégé of Flaubert, he was celebrated for his naturalistic fiction, and wrote over 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books and one volume of verse in his short but highly productive lifetime. He died in an asylum aged just 43. This collection brings together dramatisations of some of his finest works.

A stagecoach containing a microcosm of French society seek to escape to Le Havre during the Prussian war. Stopping at an inn along the way, they soon realize they have blundered into Prussian occupied territory. The travelers are not allowed to leave until one woman, a prostitute known as Boule de Suif, (literally suet dumpling, or ball of fat), sleeps with the commanding officer. This turn of events is met with universal indignation by the travelers. But as the days stretch out, everyone’s true colors are revealed.

Life has the capacity of great moments and attainment, of lives well lived, fulfilling for ourselves and for those we touch. But for others life is arduous. There is no spark to ignite the curiosity, to explore and achieve a stability and a growth to their lives. Indeed their lives, in their own eyes, become almost meaningless, their sense of themselves subsumed under a myriad of problems, whether real or imagined. Seismic events in a life might crush them; the loss of a loved one for instance. Coping is difficult, support hard to find and isolation abounds.

Loss in any form seems to burden us with more weight than anything that can possibly be gained or learnt from. The loss of a person, a loved one, is often overwhelming. Lives so interwoven that the severing or loss of one life leaves the other weakened, unable to function for some time. Recovery comes in a myriad of forms but is usually debilitating, slow and, in the end, we are not as whole as we once were.It is a subject that authors return to again and again.

When we read or listen, words can have a transforming effect. Our mood can alter in the space of a few sentences from joy to sadness. And not just our mood. These words can affect us physically, they can engage our emotions and even in their sadness bring a lump to our throat and tears to our eyes. Sometimes the relief can be palpable. Eines Tages schlägt er sie sogar, nicht nur ohne Grund, sondern auch ohne Vorwand.

Er blieb ein paar Sekunden stehen, um seine Frau zu betrachten und ward ein wenig bleich. Sie war sehr schön, schlank und sah vornehm aus in ihrem länglichen, feinen Gesicht, ihrem goldigen Elfenbeinteint, den großen grauen Augen und dem schwarzem Haar. Ohne ihn anzublicken, stieg sie ein. Dann nahm ich plötzlich, in Scham vor mir selbst wegen meiner Feigheit, meinen Schlüsselbund, suchte den Schlüssel heraus, den ich brauchte, steckt ihn ins Schlüsselloch, schloss zweimal herum, öffnete die Tür mit aller Kraft, dass der Flügel gegen die Wand flog.

Anton Chekhov, Guy de Maupassant, Kate Chopin. These three names thrill the literary world as well as our own. They have gravitas, they have knowledge, experience and they have the literary style and panache to seduce our imagined world. Each has written a short story on pleasured lips placed on another’s flesh. For Chekhov it was a kiss in a darkened room that happened by mistake. Who was she? For Chopin it was a kiss that almost derailed a hoped-for marriage proposal. Why did he do that? For de Maupassant it was a niece seeking advice from her Aunt on when to kiss and whom. And did she?

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was born on August 5th, 1850, near Dieppe in France. In 1880 he published what is considered his first great work, ‘Boule de Suif’, (translated as as ‘Dumpling’, ‘Butterball’, ‘Ball of Fat’, or ‘Ball of Lard’), which met with a success that was both instant and overwhelming. Flaubert at once acknowledged that it was ‘a masterpiece that will endure.’ Maupassant had used his talents and experiences in the war to create something unique.

Die laute Musik des Orchesters, die wie ein Orkan daher stürmte, durchtoste Mauern und Dach, klang in das ganz Stadtviertel hinaus, in alle Straßen bis hinein in die benachbarten Häuser, um jene unwiderstehliche Lust, die als tierischer Instinkt im Menschenherzen lebt, zu wecken: die Lust zu tanzen, sein Blut in Wallung zu bringen, sich zu unterhalten.
