This work of lyric prose is Maggie Hess' retelling of the great Japanese poem "Hojoki", only about Hess's life, instead of the Kyoto poet, Chomei. Chomei returns to river scenery where Hess draws on descriptions of birds.

Poet, mentor, and Berea College professor, Libby Jones once told me that everything I write is an ode. The collection of odes that makes up this chapbook has a variety of themes with a common element: mysticism. According to the Friends of Abrams Creek website, the Cherokees believed that the soul entered the afterlife by passing through the waterfall. My intent in this themed chapbook is to bring my listeners closer to the mystery the poet knows.

The three self-portraits are studied within the haiku writing, too, as well as being evocative stand-alone artwork. This is a book of poetry and prose that attempts to channel Words Between my eight Year old Self and Me here is the start of it: I was lying here thinking what I'd tell my 8 year old self since reading a book that implied she might still be inside of me. I wanted to ask her what dreams I should still try to achieve. I don’t know why I wasn’t actually surprised when she finally spoke. Why hadn’t I tried to reach out to her sooner? She said having a family of my own was always my dream, babies and children and a man.

I have been in a low depression, partly due to the fact that I read Disability's summary of my condition, and it made me feel week, unable, and unworthy. It made me feel like all of my hopes and dreams are just grandiose overly optimistic fantasies. But they aren't. These 42 poems remind me of the abilities I do have. So I publish them for you, so you will drink in their optimism and feel better about your suffering, as all is not lost for either me nor you.

I wanted to write a book to uplift mentally ill people of the harshest variety, schizophrenic or schizoaffective like I have. I wanted to tell the story of my own life, like some people see me. I am not a pitiable sad case. I am a hero who’s gone on adventures. Sometimes I was unstable, but that is not the purpose of my story.

A mixed genre book of poetry, memoir, fiction, and haiku, Kintsugi 金継ぎ Walnut: 22 Years of Writing tells the story of the young adulthood of Maggie Hess. The book opens with a series of diary entries from 2001, when Maggie was traveling abroad in Costa Rica with her scientist sister, exploring the rainforest daily, and becoming a Quaker.

This is an extensive diary of my time in Costa Rica from January to May 2001, sandwiched between two more recent reflective entries. I recommend listening to this if you are interested in exploring Costa Rica, in what Monteverde, Costa Rica, was like in this particular time period before much of the modern development, or if you are interested in hearing a firsthand account of a young woman with bipolar disorder in between severe swings and culture shock.
