Predating Bram Stoker's "Dracula" by twenty-five years, Sheridan Le Fanu's "Carmilla" is one of the earliest examples of vampire fiction; a Gothic novella narrated by a young girl who becomes a victim of the title character, a female vampire with whom she also kindles a romance.

One of the leading ghost story writers of the Victorian era, Sheridan Le Fanu is renowned for his chilling tales of mystery and horror. His pioneering lesbian vampire novella Carmilla was a major influence on Bram Stoker's Dracula, and spawned numerous film adaptations including Hammer Horror's Karnstein Trilogy. Opening this anthology is a dramatisation of that classic tale, starring Anne-Marie Duff as Laura, the lonely girl living in a solitary Austrian castle, who strikes up a dangerous friendship with the mysterious, bewitching Carmilla.

When a dreary and isolated country house opens its doors to an uninvited visitor, it admits a shadow that cannot be easily cast out. In master Gothic storyteller Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's The Evil Guest, an atmosphere of quiet dread settles over the household long before violence shatters the silence. As a dark murder shakes the isolated estate, suspicion creeps into every corner, turning familiar faces into riddles and forcing the living to confront the deep, unquiet malice hidden within the human heart.

Laura lives a lonely and melancholic life deep in the forest, where she and her ailing father reside in an otherwise empty castle. When, one night, Carmilla crashes her carriage into view nearby, Laura’s life changes rapidly into something feverish and erotic. The relationship that develops between the two women forms the blueprint for the lesbian vampire trope in all the stories that follow. But as Laura becomes plagued with nightmares and starts displaying strange symptoms, the truth about Carmilla—and its implications—come into the light.

Read by T. P. McKenna, stories range from Gerald Griffin's chilling tale, "The Brown Man", to the delicate and closely observed "Araby", taken from James Joyce's Dubliners, about adolescent sexual awakening. Also included are Oscar Wilde's stylish and witty story "The Model Millionaire", about a...
