Austin J. Small (1894-1929) was a popular British mystery and thriller writer who was published in the United Kingdom under the pseudonym 'Seamark'. The Man They Couldn't Arrest - written in 1925 - is a fast paced thriller about Valman Dain, an inventor who (amongst numerous other intriguing gadgets) develops a mechanism for eavesdropping on conversations using the telephone network.

A poor schoolteacher decides to spend the summer vacation at a remote country inn, where he falls gradually in love with not only the tavern's way of life, but also the landlord's daughter, the lovely Miss Fouracres. Meanwhile the landlord is sinking into drink and despair, driven by his obsession over an incident at a hotel he ran several years ago. Edward Frederic Benson (1867-1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist, and short story writer, best known for his evocative and beautifully narrated ghost stories. Expiation is a real gem of a ghost story. Two old friends rent a lonely house in an idyllic but remote part of Cornwall. But within a short time of their arrival, they become aware of a mystery about the house.

Charles John Cutcliffe Wright Hyne (1866-1944) was a British writer of popular adventure fiction and fantastic literature. "The Mummy of Thompson-Pratt" is a strange supernatural tale of Gargrave, a young egyptologist at Cambridge University who manages to reanimate the 3,000-year-old mummy of Menen-Ra via the man he has identified as a direct descendent of the ancient egyptian. The descendent is the young gad-about-town Thompson-Pratt.

Morgan Andrew Robertson (1861-1915) was a popular American author of short stories and novels who claimed to have been the inventor of the periscope. 'Absolute Zero' is a strange supernatural story about two marine artists who are friends and who work in adjoining studios. The younger of the two has been working on a strange painting for some time. It shows an odd scene onboard a ship.

Vincent O'Sullivan (1868-1940), born in New York to an Irish American family, moved as a child to London. As a young man, he soon became well recognised as the master of decadent and macabre fiction. 'Will' is the macabre tale of a man who is in the process of poisoning his wife using the most deadly, untraceable and secret poison ever discovered. His wife has realized what he is doing but is powerless to prevent her own death...but she vows to exact a ghastly and morbid revenge from beyond the grave.

Neap-Tide Madness is the strange story of Sir Jaspar Slane's visits to the Dormy House in Norfolk. One foggy evening Slane glimpses the figure of a man emerge from the mist carrying a hunting rifle. The figure raises his gun and shoots at Slane from close quarters, narrowly misses him and vanishes again into the mist. When he makes it back to the Dormy House, Slane learns that the loose madman is the mysterious Mark Rennett - a fishman and hunter who lives in a ramshackle cottage on the marshes with his extraordinarily beautiful wife.

'Over the Border' is a fascinating tale about hypnosis and mesmerism. The narrator lost much of his memory for many years after leaving his former life as a sailor. One night he visits a theatre where a hypnotist is performing. On his way home on the tram, he hears two doctors discussing a case at the hospital - a man with amnesia.

Lady Bessie Kyffin-Taylor was an English writer famous for her outstanding supernatural stories which were published in a single volume in 1920, just two years before her death. Room Number Ten tells the story of Peter Maxton, a literary gentleman invited to join a house party at a remote house in Scotland. The driver taking him to the house from the station comments that the house is full, and they may have to use room number 10, and he pities whoever has to sleep there.

"Comrades" reveals an ironic humour in its conception and is one of Gorky's lighter tales. A peasant policeman is dispatched to escort a vagrant without papers to the nearest magistrate, a considerable distance away. As the two talk on the journey, it becomes clear to the listener...and finally to the policeman...the real identity of the vagrant.

Oliver Goldsmith (1730 – 1774) was an Irish novelist, playwright and poet. In "The History of the Man in Black" he describes the cynical journey of a generous and benevolent young man from dire pecuniary circumstances to riches, achieved by divesting himself of any moral considerations for others.

Bithia Mary Croker (1848-1920) was an Irish-born novelist and a notable writer of ghost stories, most of which concern life and society in British India. 'The Dâk Bungalow at Dakor' is the story of Mrs Goodchild and Mrs Lloyd, who are travelling from Karwassa to Chanda to see their husbands for Christmas.

Dr Henry St Clair Whitehead ( 1882-1932) was an American clergyman and teacher who became famous for his creepy tales of magic and voodoo published in the magazine Weird Tales in the 1920s. 'The Shadows' is a tale from the West Indies about Mr. Stewart, an American who moves into an old house, locally known as Morris' House. Morris has been dead for several decades, but nobody seems keen to tell Mr. Stewart anything about the circumstances of Morris' death.

Max Adeler was the nom de plume of the American writer and humorist Charles Heber Clark (1841 - 1915). His tale A Desperate Adventure begins thus: "WANTED, four persons who are bent upon committing suicide, to engage in a hazardous adventure. Apply etc. to Captain Cowgill, No. 1, Blank Street after nine o'clock in the morning."

"The Box Tunnel" tells the story of a bet between two soldiers, travelling on a train across Britain, in the spring of 1847, that one of them will not manage to kiss one of the two other ladies travelling in the carriage. One of these ladies is pretty, the other rather unattractive. The young soldier takes up the bet, and when the train reaches the box tunnel, just after Swindon, he commits the outrage on the delicious young Miss Haythorne. This ungentlemanly conduct cannot be allowed to go unpunished....

He was a close friend of Oscar Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley and other leaders of the aesthetic movement. "When I was Dead" is the macabre story of a man who gradually realises he has died unexpectedly...and resists vigorously this awful turn of events.

Francis Marion Crawford (1854-1909) was an American writer noted for his classic weird and fantastic stories, especially those set in Italy. One of the most famous of these is 'For the Blood Is the Life' - a strange and uncanny vampire story set on the coast of Calabria.

'Mr. Tallent's Ghost' is an amusing tale about an eccentric writer who likes to read his appalling and tedious novels aloud to his relatives...or indeed anyone who will listen. He persuades a lawyer to draw up a will devoting his entire fortune to funding the publication of his writing. Shortly after this, news of Mr. Tallent's death arrives. The disinherited relations dispute the will vigorously, and soon after this, the ghost of Mr. Tallent begins to haunt the relatives and the executor.

Beatrice Harraden (1864–1936) was a British writer and suffragette. In An Idyll of London she describes the poignant friendship between two lonely individuals, both of them artists. One is an old man approaching the end of a miserable life, where he has nursed resentment and bitterness towards all around him. The other is a young woman who has already faced many hardships, but retains great optimism and shows kindness to all around them.
