Désirée and Armand’s marriage was passionate and loving. But everything changes when their baby is born, who appears to be of mixed race.

The inevitable is understood by each and every one of us who faces the final calling. So too are the effects on those left behind. The memories are there but the empty space, the void can never be refilled. It remains a dark, unreliable pit of loneliness. The sadness and often depression, the lack of will to continue may swamp us all. Unquenchable, undeniable. But loss can, after mourning, give the opportunity to reappraise the lost and how we can each move forward. In the literary world an accessible balance can be given.

The American literary tradition has, in a far shorter span of time than others throughout history, achieved a glowing and glittering reputation. From its transatlantic roots it has absorbed the sons and daughters of other cultures, other lands and made them part of her own. Within this melting pot of styles, genres and wordplay one fact stands out: In the American short story, Literary tradition has a strong, vibrant and almost inclusive history, if you know where to look.

Anton Chekhov, Guy de Maupassant, Kate Chopin. These three names thrill the literary world as well as our own. They have gravitas, they have knowledge, experience and they have the literary style and panache to seduce our imagined world. Each has written a short story on pleasured lips placed on another’s flesh. For Chekhov it was a kiss in a darkened room that happened by mistake. Who was she? For Chopin it was a kiss that almost derailed a hoped-for marriage proposal. Why did he do that? For de Maupassant it was a niece seeking advice from her Aunt on when to kiss and whom. And did she?

Presented here are three of the most important feminist novels ever written: Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and The Awakening by Kate Chopin. Each of these works is an early groundbreaking piece of fiction from some of literature's finest female writers as they explore life, love, and the struggle of women to find their voices in a time where they were too often silenced and suppressed.

Controversial, scandalous and almost universally censored and criticized upon its first release in 1899, Kate Chopin's The Awakening is a pioneering novel of female independence and sexual exploration and was one of the earliest American works of fiction to examine the societal oppression that beset married women in the last 19th century.

Kate Chopin was born in Louisiana in 1850, and established her life there as a groundbreaking author, as the subject of her work included radical—for the time—ideas, such as feminism, race, and social change. Her notable and important works include but are not limited to: Beyond the Bayou and The Story of an Hour. Her reach was vast for her time, as among her publications was a story in Vogue. She was largely regarded as one of the best authors of her time.

Kate Chopin, one of the great literary writers of 19th-century American fiction, was a woman ahead of her time. From the early 1890s, Chopin was writing short stories, articles, and translations which appeared in periodicals and magazines regionally based in St. Louis - she was perceived as a "local color" writer, but her literary qualities were discounted. Volume 1 includes the following short stories: "Beyond The Bayou"; "Ma'Ame Pelagie"; "Desiree's Baby"; "A Respectable Woman"; "The Kiss"; "A Pair of Silk Stockings"; "The Locket"; and "A Reflection".

A young Confederate soldier is given a solid gold locket before he heads to war. He and the woman who gave it to him are passionately in love and long for the time when they can be together. The locket is noticed by some of the other soldiers and plays an important part in what transpires as battle looms over their camp.

"Beyond the Bayou" is about La Folle, an African American woman and former slave, who overcomes her crippling and irrational childhood fear of passing an imaginary territorial line or going beyond the bayou.

Kate Chopin's brilliant short story about an hour in the life of a young wife. When news arrives that Louise's husband has been killed in a railroad accident, her family and friends are careful to break it to her gently, knowing that she has a heart condition. Louise locks herself in her room for an hour, during which she realizes that this bereavement is the start of a new life of freedom and independence. But a much greater shock awaits her when she leaves her room and goes downstairs....

American author Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" was written in April of 1894 and originally published in Vogue in December of that year. The title refers to the time elapsed between the moments at which the protagonist, Louise Mallard, hears that her husband is dead, then discovers that he is alive after all. The short story is a mainstay of feminist literary study.

A collection of short stories written by some of the greatest female writers of all time including Virginia Woolf, Kate Chopin, Katherine Mansfield, and Winifred Holtby.
