Somewhere inside every one of us lives an accountant. He keeps a ledger of who owes what, tallies every slight, and calls the balance justice. He is not a villain. He is the reason civilization works. He is also the reason you cannot sleep at three in the morning, prosecuting an argument that...

Fred Hoyle worked out where you came from. Not in the vague way that phrase is usually meant, but atom by atom: the calcium in your teeth, the iron riding in your blood, the oxygen you are using right now to read this sentence.

We are taught that generosity is always a virtue, that the person who gives more is the better person, and that love is measured by how much of ourselves we are willing to hand away. But what happens when giving stops coming from fullness and starts coming from fear—fear of being rejected, of being invisible, of not being enough? What happens when kindness quietly becomes a way of begging to be kept? This is a book about the moment generosity turns into a wound.

A hundred years ago, a Russian priest who had trained himself into a physiologist watched a cat that was interrupted in the middle of a private act. The animal did not stop and turn to the interruption, as every rule of the day insisted it should. It bore down harder. From that stubborn creature Alexei Ukhtomsky drew a law of the nervous system he called the dominant: a single governing focus that gathers the whole mind toward one aim and quietly goes blind to everything else. It is the reason you can finish a symphony, raise a child, or learn a trade.

He was a surgeon who quarreled with his own profession, an inventor who carried the hospital to the battlefield, a communist in a country that distrusted the word, and a difficult, proud, restless man who became a national hero on the far side of the world. Norman Bethune left Canada because his conscience could not breathe there. In China he found the one place where his deepest belief could finally become action: that medicine must move toward suffering, and that a nation which lets its people wait, and bleed, and go without care is a nation nursing a wound it refuses to close.

He was not a doctor. He was admitted to the Academy of Medicine by a majority of exactly one vote, and once, after explaining to that same Academy where chicken cholera comes from, he was challenged to a duel by an eighty-year-old orthopedic surgeon who did not believe in germs and did not intend to start. Louis Pasteur also saved more human lives than anyone else alive in his century. The Invisible World follows him from a tanner's yard in the Jura to a crypt lined with gold mosaic, and argues that everything he did came out of a single stubborn conviction formed when he was twenty-five...

The failures that ought to trouble us are not the hard ones. Famine relief is complicated; peace settlements are complicated; climate is complicated. The troubling failures are the easy ones. Conflicts that run for thirty years and end on terms both sides could have written in an afternoon. Warnings filed, costed, and ignored until the water arrives. Men in office whom any competent hospital administrator would outperform by lunchtime. Every news bulletin carries three or four of these, and they are not difficult problems badly solved. They are simple problems not solved at all.

We are taught to treat innocence as a phase. It is the thing the world is supposed to take from us, the softness we are expected to outgrow on the way to becoming serious, competent, unfoolable adults. To be called innocent, past a certain age, is to be gently insulted. This book argues that we have misread one of the rarest and most valuable capacities a human being can possess.

A man asked what looked like a simple question, and he expected a simple answer. Who is my neighbor? He wanted a line drawn on a map, a fence around his obligation, so he could know exactly whom he was required to love and feel at peace about everyone on the other side. He did not get a line. He got a road, a ditch, a beaten stranger, two respectable men of God who crossed to the far side and kept walking, and a foreigner from the wrong side of an old and bitter quarrel who stopped. And by the end the question had been turned inside out. Jesus never said who counts as a neighbor.

Three men are handed a fortune and told nothing. Two put the money at risk. One buries his share, keeps it perfectly safe, and returns every coin of it. He is the only one condemned — and he is the only one who lost nothing. Most of us spend a third of our waking lives inside arrangements we rarely examine: an agreement to give hours in exchange for money, made with someone who holds more power than we do, governed by rules that are mostly unwritten. We know when something has gone wrong in such an arrangement. We are far less certain what would make it right.

Everyone knows the line. Great things have small beginnings. Mighty oaks from little acorns grow. Start where you are, use what you have, and the rest will follow. It is the most quoted piece of encouragement in the language, and it is attached to a two-thousand-year-old story about a seed. The story does not say what people think it says. Anna Kriger takes the most famous parable about smallness and asks a question that its admirers have somehow avoided for twenty centuries: is it actually true?

We have quietly performed one of the strangest tricks in the history of belief. We let go of the old story that a creator set us above all living things and handed us the world to use—and then we kept the world anyway. We dropped the doctrine and pocketed the privilege. We still breed, train, cage, eat, and rearrange the lives of other creatures as though a permission slip from heaven were tucked in our back pocket, even after we have announced, loudly, that we no longer believe in the one who signed it. This book begins in that contradiction and follows it everywhere it leads.

Peter the Apostle came with a calculator. How many times should I forgive my brother—up to seven? It is a reasonable question, the question of a man who wants a rule he can follow and a number he can reach. Most of us arrive at this subject holding the same calculator. We want to know what a grudge costs, whether the cost is worth it, and how much longer we are obliged to keep paying. The answer Peter received was not a larger number.
