As grown-ups, we tend to have several people depending on us. Our teams need us to be on our A game each day, and folks in our personal life need our time and attention. Adulting is exhausting and overwhelming at times. People who have been in overwhelm too long often feel discouraged and resigned that this is “just life.” Overwhelm is believed to be a natural consequence of their profession, the industry they work in or their stage of life.

Making meaningful connections with other humans is one of the great joys in life. We may form lifelong personal or professional friendships, we may connect with someone with shared experience through a season of our lives or we may just have a great conversation. This is relationship building which in business circles we refer to as “networking”. Along the way networking became less about forming human connections and transitioned, at least in business to become transactional and centered around how we can extract value from others to benefit ourselves.

We deserve to work with and for people we trust. We should be confident we’ll be treated fairly and that the rules will apply consistently to everyone in the organization. We should have no reason to question that our leader will follow through on a commitment, whether it’s documented in our performance agreement or made casually when they pass us in the hallway.

This book is about doing our best work. Sometimes distractions, personality clashes, and working with people whose working styles are different than ours, can create friction. Some colleagues have work styles that frustrate us and slow down progress. They say we spend 90,000 hours at work during our lifetime. How great would it be if most of those hours were productive, impactful and fulfilling?
