A bestseller upon its publication, The Home-Maker is about an ordinary family in New England – with a twist. Deeply felt, wonderfully observed, the novel interrogates the absurdly rigid, gendered parenting expectations many still face today. Above all, it is a tender portrait of love...

Dedicated to keeping her home immaculate and organized, Evangeline Knapp runs a tight ship, with the Knapp family constantly on edge. Meanwhile, her husband Lester, a dreamer, drifts through his bookkeeping job. Both feel depressed and out of place. Suddenly, after a near-fatal accident, their roles are reversed: Lester is confined to home in a wheelchair and his wife must work to support the family. Evangeline dedicates herself to improvement and customer service, something she learned working in her father’s store as a child.

"Understood Betsy" is a beloved children's book that was first published in 1916. It tells the story of Elizabeth Ann, a young girl who has been raised in a sheltered and overprotective environment by her Aunt Frances. Elizabeth Ann is a timid and obedient child who has never been allowed to make her own decisions or take risks. She has always been told what to do and how to behave. However, when Aunt Frances falls ill and is unable to care for Elizabeth Ann, she is sent to live with her previously unknown relatives in rural Vermont.

What if your worst nightmare was the best thing that ever happened to you? Nine-year-old Elizabeth Ann has spent her entire life sheltered under a glass jar - anxious, coddled, and completely reliant on grown-ups to make every single decision for her. But when her quiet life is turned upside...

Evangeline Knapp's neighbors are in awe of her prowess. She re-upholsters furniture and can take scraps of fabric and create a beautiful garment. Her house is always immaculate and her children are beautifully behaved - except for the stubborn youngest, but with Eva's strength of will, they're certain she'll sort him out in time. The neighbors don't know that in her frenzied zeal to create the perfect home, her children live in dread of her temper. She loves them, but she can't stand having to remind them constantly about the same things, simple rules easy enough for anyone to understand.

Elizabeth Ann is being carefully brought up by her Aunt Frances. Aunt Frances shares in all Elizabeth Ann's fears and slights, walks her to and from school each day, and conscientiously follows the most modern theories on child-rearing. She is the original helicopter parent. Not surprisingly, at nine years old Elizabeth Ann is timid and shy, friendless, and completely dependent on her doting aunt. Then an emergency occurs, and the fearful little girl is temporarily sent to other relatives who live on a farm in Vermont.
