A short story from the British Library Crime Classic collection Final Acts. Detective novelist Dorothy L. Sayers presents a look at morality and motive as playwright John Scales grows angrier and more resentful towards the actor who reinvented his script, and must decide how far he will allow his hatred to take him.

The scene begins in a courtroom, where the judge sums up the arguments against Harriet Vane, a crime novelist accused of poisoning her ex-lover, Peter Boyes. Vane turns out to have bought arsenic at drugstores near her, supposedly to research a novel that she is writing. Lord Peter, watching the trial, is convinced that Harriet Vane is not the real killer. The jury trying her is hung, giving him time to investigate the murder while Harriet waits in prison for a retrial.

After the respectable George Harrison, a middle-aged mycologist, is unexpectedly found dead at his dining table with a plate of wild mushrooms before him, his passing is initially deemed a tragic accident. But Harrison's son, Paul, struggles to accept this verdict. As he begins to investigate further, it appears that this was no fatal mistake by an amateur forager, but something far more complex, calculating and ruthless. Through a series of letters, personal accounts and legal documents, Paul begins to unravel the chilling truth behind what happened.
