A peaceful mountain getaway turns deadly as John and Sara Todd hike in the high desert of Central Oregon during the spotted owl and War on Drugs controversies of the 1990s. Stumbling upon a deserted shack, the Todds find a wallet stuffed with hundred-dollar bills. In their attempt to return the money, they unwittingly stumble into a web of missing persons, illicit drugs, and murder. John’s military police training and Sara’s love of mysteries keep them one step ahead of Sergeant Hansen and the FBI, but make them targets of a drug cartel.

The driver, barreling down a long gravel driveway from an abandoned sawmill, doesn't stop. As John and Sara track down the person who wrecked their car, they stumble into a case of illegal waste dumping and a desperate business owner. The Todds stay a step ahead of the DEQ, local police, and FBI, but as they put together the pieces, they find themselves in the crosshairs of a man with nothing to lose.

While on a bus tour on the Scottish moors in the mid-1990s, amateur sleuths John and Sara Todd overhear what sounds like a plot to murder. In a castle hotel, they wake to a scuffle in the hallway. When a body is found in the pond the next morning, Scotland Yard and the local constabulary are called in. John and Sara, with their traveling friends the Slaters and Arthurs, form the "Committee", and they are on the case! Using all their wits, unique personalities, and talents, they stay one step ahead of the detectives and close in on the murderer, placing themselves at risk.
