Spring Bureau Sorceress and Weaving Master Fahng has returned from her quest through the Jade Emperor’s Skyland. The threat of Jōshwee hangs over the Dukedom of Morning Song, and she looks for ways to use the magic of the Pipes of Kunlun in the city’s defense.

Young weaving master Fahng comes upon Hwagway, a mysterious child who wears the same tattoos as she does and whistles a bird language. Seeking to restore a pair of spirit turtle shells to the royal ancestral altar, they are drawn into the power struggle between the Duke of Morning Song and his half brother, Jōshwee. Hwagway tells Fahng that the musical instruments of Morning Song are not tuned according to the ancient tones, and the discord will bring bad luck if the army needs to march into battle against Jōshwee. But it will take a true set of pitch pipes to correct the tuning.

Sold to a master weaver, a thirteen-year old apprentice called Fahng must divine the meaning of a “sampler” made of strings and bamboo to continue with her weaving sisterhood. Encoded in a forgotten language of knotted Patterns, the sampler is The Weaving Maiden's Mystery. Aided by clues from weaving lore and her master’s training in martial arts, dance, and fortune telling, Fahng discovers the guild’s wisdom and its closely guarded technique for making an exquisite gauze fabric. Her visionary talents lead her to become a weaving master in her own right.
