This book combines the characters from the “Gus, the Ghost-Face Dog” series with the characters from “The Dance Team Detectives.” Both sets of characters have a family connection and visit the same family ranch. The characters are older now, and their adventures are even more challenging. In the first two stories, the Mitchell siblings and cousins investigate the theft of a priceless family heirloom, and then attempt to rescue herds of wildlife from poachers.

This book contains three individual stories, set between 1861 and 1867. The first story "Pony Express" is about a 14-year-old boy, Ben O'Brien, and his 17-year-old sister, Margaret, who have lost their parents and all the horses on the horse ranch due to a Paiute Warrior attack.

Esther gets kidnapped by Comanches. Caleb goes off hunting on his own and deals with a hunting accident. The families endure their hardships and challenges through faith and the power of prayer.
