Before the silence, there were whispers. Before the light, there was a scream. When paranormal investigators Brian and Rafael encounter Echo, a mysterious entity with broken wings, their fake ghost hunts become terrifyingly real. Echo's otherworldly song calls out for the missing, the forgotten, the lost—including children taken by a grieving man who has become something far more dangerous. When her arrival coincides with a string of abductions, Detective Zhou and psychic consultant Clementine join forces with Brian and Rafael to expose a monster who believes he's serving something divine.

With these words we are launched into the exploits of an exceptional group of children as they play out through the Texas Hill Country and across the Blackland Prairies. Are they within the realm of science-fiction, or are they all simply due to drug-induced hallucinations that resulted from government- funded experimentation by a private laboratory, the University of Texas Psychology Department and the U.S. Air Force?
