After trying to help a friend with bad dreams, Crockett and Ruby are visited by a beautiful woman who was the victim of murder over 50 years ago. From an unknown grave, she sets them on a course to save her great grand daughter from repeating the mistakes of three generations. With the help of Cletus Marshal and the skill of a Vietnam era helicopter pilot, Crockett and Ruby attempt to rectify a past, save a future, and keep a Grave Promise.

"Got a gun?" With those words, David Allen Crockett, a retired police officer who simply wanted to be left alone, finds his seclusion shattered by his friend, therapist Ruby LaCost. At Ruby's request, Crockett agrees to teach one of her clients, Rachael Moore, how to defend herself with a handgun. During the course of those lessons, Crockett and Rachael begin an intimate relationship. When Rachael is found dead from an apparent suicide, Crockett is devastated and tries to slink back into his self-imposed seclusion.

When Ruben Beeler finds a rancher friend shot to death and mutilated, he calls on Marshals Marion Daniels and Homer Poteet for help. That call begins a chase that takes the men from St. Joe into Kansas and down to Hell on the Border and the Fort Smith court of Hangin' Judge Issac Parker. In pursuit of the killers, the Marshals venture into the Oklahoma Territory, or "The Nations" as it was known at the time, following a path of bloodlust that began before the killing of Arkansas Bill Cole. Serial killers are nothing new, as the Marshals find out on the Cutthroat Trail.

It was a chance for a new beginning and a better life for a wagon train of hopefuls leaving the war-torn South to relocate in Kansas. Unfortunately, new enemies and old habits die hard, and the truth can come to mean very little. Out-manned and out-gunned, Ruben, Marion, and Homer put their lives on the line as they saddle up and fight for what is right on the Glory Trail.
