When did it become a harder time instead of the delight that “they” say it is supposed to be? When did November through the beginning of January become a time to get through instead of something which makes you giddy? What made all the decorations and gatherings become something to endure rather than impetus to ooh’s, ah’s and put-on holiday happiness? You are invited to a different sort of Christmas season. Perhaps, in certain ways, a more blessed one. Even when there is pain and difficulty. Maybe especially so.

What if something as simple as listening to song prayers could facilitate personal transformation in ways that bolstered your resilience thereby augmenting your emotional well-being? This is what my doctoral research found by documenting the experiences of four women veterans who listened to song prayers with regularity, repetition, intentionality, and reflection. Listening to song prayers as a private spiritual discipline opens up a liminal space between the physical and spiritual realms where God responds with His interaction.

Are you disgusted by aspects of yourself and wish you were different? Have you thought about harming yourself? Have you experienced rejection? At the time, these thoughts against myself were my reality, but I didn’t know they were an outcome of how I had been treated and not the truth about me (or you) at all. I’m like you.
