In his cycle of 15 Hymns on Paradise, St Ephrem the Syrian weaves a profound theological synthesis around the Biblical narrative in Genesis 2 and 3. In this fine Christian poetry, the author expresses his awareness of the sacramental character of the created world, and of the potential of...

Unseen Warfare is a profound spiritual classic edited by Saint Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain and revised by Saint Theophan the Recluse. This 400-page volume, translated by E. Kadloubovsky and G.E.H. Palmer, offers timeless wisdom on the interior spiritual battle faced by Christians. Perfect for those interested in Orthodox spirituality, this work provides practical guidance for overcoming passions and cultivating virtues.

In On the Apostolic Preaching, Saint Irenaeus of Lyon provides a clear and compelling summary of the Christian faith, emphasizing the unity of God revealed through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Written in the second century—a time marked by competing religions and philosophies—this foundational work calls believers to remain faithful to Scripture, which recounts God’s saving actions and the covenant that draws humanity into communion with Him.

This volume presents a new translation of St Basil’s On the Holy Spirit, a classic expression of the Church's faith in the Spirit, and a lasting testimony to the author’s Christian erudition. In the words of St Gregory the Theologian, St Basil’s treatise was “written by a pen borrowed from the Spirit’s store.” This work sets forth the distinction of the divine Persons, and their perpetual communion and conjunction. It talks also about the nature of theological language, and the theological significance of the Church’s tradition of worship and proclamation.

St Basil's homilies on the subject of wealth and poverty, although delivered in the fourth century, remain utterly fresh and contemporary. Whether you possess great wealth or have modest means, at the heart of St Basil's message stands the maxim: Simplify your life, so you have something to share with others. While some patristic texts relate to obscure and highly philosophical questions, St Basil's teachings on social issues are immediately understood and applicable.

While courses in Bible and theology typically require research papers, particularly at the graduate level, very few include training in research. Professors have two options: use valuable class time to teach students as much as they can, or lower their standards with the understanding that...

St. Gregory Palamas wrote the Triads, the foremost of his many theological works, to refute Barlaam the Calabrian's attacks upon the spiritual practices of the Athonite monks.

Taking Jorge Luis Borges’ famous story “The Zahir” as a reference or “hypotext,” The Book of Things Unknown offers a surprising variant. Set in the cultural framework of post-Communist Orthodox Romania, Simon Palamas’ love of books, his marriage, and his travels lead him on a spiritual and literary quest through diverse religious and literary traditions (Chinese mythology; Sufi, Hindu and Buddhist mysticism; and both Western and Eastern Orthodox Christianity), yielding an astonishing end to the journey.

This is the third of a three-volume series. The first two volumes translated St Symeon's Ethical Discourses, while this audiobook seeks to place the teaching of the discourses in their proper context, both among Symeon's other writings and with regard to his sources in the Tradition. Included thus is a sketch of Symeon's life and times, together with an extensive discussion of his thought, particularly against the background in the ascetical, mystical, and theological literature of the Christian East prior to the tenth century.

This is the second of a three-volume series translating The Ethical Discourses into English for the first time. Where Volume I presented St Symeon's treatments of the Church, the sacraments, and the "Day of the Lord," in this collection the listener finds him addressing the traditional language of Eastern Christian asceticism in the light of his message. The SVS Press audiobook program is sponsored by St. Symeon Illumination Fund.

The Gospel according to Luke uniquely details an exchange between Christ and one of the thieves crucified with Him: "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom." And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise" (Lk 23.42–43). This book gathers seventeen late antique and early medieval sermons centered upon the "good thief," who figured prominently in celebrations of Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Pascha.

The Soul's Longing: An Orthodox Christian Perspective on Biblical Interpretation has as its main purpose to show the deep connection between spiritual life and biblical interpretation which is both inspiring and accurate. It also makes clear the powerful effect of the interpreter's theology – especially the understanding of who Jesus Christ is – upon his or her method of biblical interpretation.

St Sarapion, a friend of St Anthony the Great and St Athanasius, first lived as a monk and abbot in the Egyptian desert before becoming bishop of Thmuis. This is a translation of the Euchologion (or prayer book) of St Sarapion, which contains thirty prayers for Baptism, the Liturgy, and several other needs and situations.

Nearly ten years in the making, this liturgical translation of the Psalter is the result of a collaborative effort between translators, editors, scholars, church musicians, and the communities of St Vladimir's Seminary and St Tikhon's Monastery. The goal for this project was to find translational register that was both accurate to the original and, at the same time, felt familiar within the liturgical context in which it would be read and sung.

The Life of Repentance and Purity provides listeners with a comprehensive overview of the practice of repentance and purity, essential aspects of Christian life. Pope Shenouda III draws on Scripture, the Church Fathers, his own experience of desert monasticism, and his experience as a shepherd to millions of Christians to provide a practical understanding of how to live a life of continually turning to God.

The seven works in this volume (some translated for the first time) explore the great human mystery of death and the promise of eternal life. They present—along with On the Soul and the Resurrection (PPS 12)—a vision that is consistent, philosophically profound, and characteristic of Gregory’s wider theology.

The Chapters on Theology is one of Maximus’ most eclectic writings. In this short piece, Maximus discusses many diverse themes, including God's relation to the cosmos, monastic discipline and life, scriptural difficulties, and his vision of the consummated universe in relation to the incarnate Word of God. The work is arranged into 200 “chapters,” which are often pithy pearls of wisdom that monks could learn from the respected figure of an elder or abbot. Chapters tend to address a range of issues monks would face in the course of their spiritual progress.

Maximus' vision of the liturgy contemplates the interpenetrating relationships of all things with each other and with Christ, in whom all things cohere. The church building, the human being, and the cosmos are all mutually related and symbolically reflect each other. Further, in the liturgy, we enter into the mystery of Christ.

Romanos straddled the worlds of antiquity and Byzantium, and his hymns are a unique fusion of classical rhetoric, Syriac poetry, and the theology of the Cappadocian Fathers. Scripture comes to life in his hymns, inviting the faithful to encounter biblical events in their own liturgical experience, where the human-divine encounter was enriched with sacred music and holy ritual, amplifying moments of desire, sadness, and joy.

The last half of the 20th century saw the establishment of the reputation of St Maximus the Confessor as the greatest of all Byzantine theologians, with a wholeness of vision that speaks directly to many of our concerns today. Until very recently, however, little of his work has been available...
