It was 1927, when Roscoe Wilkes, age nine, along with his parents and sister, coasted into Pioche, NV. They were on their way to Oregon when ther car started knocking on the high road just south of town, and now they were stuck. Persevering through the hardships of the depression and the loss of his father at age 12, Roscoe became the head of the household.

Not every western American town had a public cemetery nicknamed "Boot Hill". It required a lot of violent deaths for a cemetery to be called "Boot Hill". The first Boot Hill cemeteries were in the cattle towns of Hays and Dodge City, Kansas. Many of the cemetery occupants were cowboys who "died with their boots on" in gunfights, beatings, stabbings, and hangings. There are other famous Boot Hills in Tombstone, Arizona and Deadwood, South Dakota. Boot Hill cemeteries began as public cemeteries. The first victim likely arrived at the cemetery with a fatal gunshot wound.

Karen Wilkes, the granddaughter of an early 20th century hardrock miner, firmly grasps our hand and enthusiastically leads us into the remote and private world of a western mining town — Pioche, Nevada. In a labor of love, Karen Wilkes takes us into her personal search to uncover the hidden history of the notorious desperadoes who populated her hometown of Pioche—many of whom ended up in the legendary Boot Hill graveyard she could see from her living room window.
