It is the first in the series called Gate Jumpers. The book is a mesh of things I like. It is set slightly in the future and is about a group of special forces guys that are trying to stop enemies from another dimension. It has Elves, Orcs, Demons, and even annoying Gnomes.

Lucius Coelius Felix, a once-proud Roman nobleman, has lost his will to live. Angered by the failure of his quest for healing, he travels to the springs of Hierapolis in central Asia Minor to die. Go-go and his raiders train in Avalon Online. The training is hard, new people join the raiders and they are all off on an adventure through space as they board the HS Viper.

A Rooster for Asklepios centers on Marcus, a slave in the household of Lucius Coelius Felix who enjoys a better life than most slaves (and many free citizens) as the secretary and accountant of a wealthy aristocrat. His master is rising in the civic hierarchy of the Roman colony of Antioch-near-Pisidia (Central Turkey), and his responsibilities and income are growing as well. If this continues, he could soon earn enough to buy his freedom, set up a small business, maybe even marry. Then disaster strikes....
