In his ninth motorcycle journey, award-winning author Lawrence Bransby has chosen to travel through Vietnam. With the ever-present spectre of the war looking over his shoulder, Bransby travels throughout this fiercely independent country, meeting local people, riding sections of the Ho Chi Minh Trail close to the border with Cambodia, and spending time in a Vietnamese hospital after an accident–somehow inevitable after negotiating what are accepted as the second most dangerous roads in the world.

Well, it wasn't a car--it was bikes, a KLE500 and a KTM990, and by the end of the trip the KLE was pretty much trashed. On their third epic trip together, Lawrence Bransby and his son Gareth head for the notorious Pamir Highway, the second highest "highway" in the world, tucked deep in the Pamir Mountains of Central Asia. For those in the know, this area has roads and tracks that can be defined as "motorcycle adventure travel at its best". And it didn't disappoint.

Most people would regard it as irresponsible madness for a father to take his 17-year-old son, riding old and somewhat worn-out XT500 motorcycles, on a four-month ride across Africa. But Lawrence Bansby did. Lawrence and his son Gareth set off on their old but bulletproof XT500s with a handful of spare parts, very little money, and the three Michelin maps that cover Africa. The plan was to travel north from their home in Natal, South Africa, then west through Zaire, the Central African Republic, Nigeria, Niger, and, finally, across the Sahara through Algeria, but it was not to be.

It took Lawrence Bransby and his son, Gareth, three journeys into Central Asia before they were able to ride the legendary Bartang Pass. But it's another pass that becomes the focus of this story - Matts Pass in southern Tajikistan - and a motorcycle gets abandoned deep in the Pamir Mountains after father and son push the limits of their bodies and bikes just one step too far. Never before - across Africa, into the Russian taiga, or in the Western Sahara - have they had to abandon a bike and walk out...

When I was 12 years old, my father, brother and I walked 372 miles from Umhlanga Rocks, just north of Durban, South Africa, to Lourenco Marques in Mocambique. On the trip, my father kept a very brief diary, jotting down what we did on each day and revealing some of his thoughts and feelings along the way in a matter-of-fact style so typical of him.
