In the rural Deep South, there are stories about people who, upon the approach of their death, have been greeted by dead loved ones who return as ghosts to lead them into the next world. This is one of those stories.

The Apology of Socrates, by Plato, is the dialogue that presents the speech of legal self-defense, which Socrates presented at his trial for impiety and corruption, in 399 BC. Specifically, The Apology of Socrates is a defense against the charges of “corrupting the youth” and “not believing in the same gods as the city, but in other gods which are novel” to Athens.

A poor porter stops to take a rest on the bench outside the gate of a rich merchant's house, where he complains to Allah about the injustice of a world which allows the rich to live in ease while he must work hard and yet remain poor. The owner of the house hears about this and requests to speak to the porter, finding that they are both named Sinbad. The rich Sinbad tells the poor Sinbad that he became wealthy "by fortune and fate" during seven wondrous voyages, which he then proceeds to tell.
