Jaclyn Ramsey returns to the small town of Upland, Arizona to exact retribution on her beautiful double-crossing partner, Sherri Denny, but only after she gets her hands on her share of their ill-gotten money. Jaclyn has also sworn vengeance by way of death against the Chief of Police of Upland, the man who turned Sherri against her.

After the U.S. declares war on Japan in 1941, all persons of Japanese descent in the Western U.S. come under suspicion. Curfews are imposed, bank accounts frozen, and FBI agents search homes randomly. Despite the fact that two generations of the Miyota family are American citizens, Fumio and his parents and sister Kimiko must pack meager belongings and are transported under military escort to the California desert to be held at Camp Manzanar, leaving their good friends and neighbors the Whitlocks to care for their farm and their dog, Flyer.

With most of the police force of Upland, Arizona out of town, conman Burdick and his gang--Janet, his Navajo girlfriend; Rubin, a burglar 'extraordinaire' who lives with his mother; Carlos, a car thief; Glover, a loner living off government aid; Doc, retired from Northern Arizona University and bored--bungle their way to a possible two-hundred-thousand-dollar cash booty hidden in a very strange place. They set up camp in a dilapidated barn where they confront and contend with Obama (a very large rooster and his hens (the Dixie Chicks).
