The battle ended. The nightmare did not. In the aftermath of Gettysburg, as smoke clears and silence settles over the blood-soaked hills, Captain Elias Mercer believes the worst is finally behind him. He is wrong. A suffocating fog creeps across the battlefield, swallowing the dead and leaving something else in their place. As night falls, Mercer and the remnants of his regiment are hunted through the streets of Gettysburg by forces that do not belong to war, yet were born from it.

A pen falls from a high rise and shatters at the feet of New York World reporter and World War vet Alan Priest. Its broken barrel bears the name and office of Fritch Designs on the 24th floor. On a whim, he investigates. As he reaches floor 24, he finds a window open and a corpse on the sidewalk below. A gawker from a nearby office window recognizes the corpse by her dress, sees Alan looking out the victim’s window and screams.

Manhattan, 1928. When Alan Priest, reporter for the New York World, discovers a body at the demolition site for the new Chrysler Building, both his and his wife Lorraine's lives are thrown into turmoil. Can they navigate the worlds of vicious mobsters, corrupt police, and Broadway stars to find the killer?
