It’s 2063 and the UK is facing a fertility crisis. The law states that every woman must conceive and give birth to two babies from the small number of fertile men left. But Cedar Sweyn doesn’t want to get pregnant. Nor do the other women she secretly supplies the illegal contraceptives to prepared by her hedge witch mother, Myrcia. In denial of her magick heritage, Cedar prefers to ground herself in the scientific reality of herbalism. Toby dog suddenly has plenty to say for himself. The only witness to the brutal murder of his owner, Toby is hexed by a woman with evil intentions. “Speak to none but me”, she tells him. Wretched and misunderstood, he’s incarcerated in the local pound. With a death sentence hanging over his head, Toby has almost given up hope. But then he meets Clarissa. Not only is she a witch, she’s a local investigative journalist, and - amazingly - she can understand what he says too. Finally, he’s found somebody who believes his story.

When journalist and part-time witch Clarissa Page first meets Toby, she thinks she’s getting a quiet companion. What she gets is a furball with opinions, secrets and more than a touch of magic. Together, they form the least conventional (but most adorable) crime-fighting duo the West Country has ever seen.

Born and raised in a small town in Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844-1900) began his career in philology (the study of language), and served as a professor at the University of Basel. In 1879, he was forced to leave due to health issues, which afflicted him throughout his life. Supported by his university pension and aided by friends, he spent the next decade as an independent author, writing the books for which he would become famous, including Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, and On the Genealogy of Morals.

April 1912: Runaway aristocrats Poppy and Daisy Melville sign on as stewardesses for the Titanic’s maiden voyage. After their harrowing rescue by the Carpathia, they are forbidden from disembarking in New York and sent back to England with the other survivors of the Titanic’s crew.

The pointy woman gave him a voice. Now, she wants to shut him up. Permanently. Would-be investigative journalist, Clarissa Page, and her sammich-obsessed spellbound hound, Toby, are making little headway in their hunt for the nasty witch, Miranda Dervish. And they’re having no luck finding the magickal four stone either. No matter which way they turn, who they ask, or where they search, they’re thwarted.

It is September 1940. Maggie and her young siblings, Grace and Billy, are living in the East End of London with their mother. Their father has been killed at Dunkirk, and their mother goes into hospital to have her fourth child, leaving the children with a neighbor. In one of the worst bombing raids of the war, their home is destroyed, and the neighbor is killed. Bewildered and frightened, the children wander the streets until they are taken in by some nuns.

Toby the dog can smell death. When someone assaults his elderly neighbor and leaves her for dead, Spellbound Hound Toby is devastated. For one thing, he’s worried who’ll keep him in cheesy dog treats now, but more than that, all indications are that Miranda Dervish - also known as The Pointy Woman - is behind this latest atrocity. The woman who murdered Old Joe and hexed Toby is back!
