The world has always been a lunatic asylum. The only difference is that previous generations of lunatics have been tidied into history textbooks, where their madness looks orderly and even inevitable. Ours has not yet had that privilege. A superpower claims sovereignty over an allied neighbor's territory. A sitting president is kidnapped from his own country. Civilian populations on every side of every conflict are ground between millstones they did not build and cannot stop.

Karl Marx was convinced he had decoded the secret engine of history. He was wrong—but not in the way most people think. The problem was never that Marx cared about injustice; it was that he built an unfalsifiable doctrine, mistook economic mechanics for universal law, and envisioned a revolution to be carried out by a class that no longer exists.

"Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains." So declared Jean-Jacques Rousseau in 1762, launching one of the most celebrated—and most dangerous—ideas in the history of Western thought. Two and a half centuries later, we are still arguing about what he meant, whether he was right, and why the pursuit of his vision has cost so many lives. This book takes Rousseau's grand declaration and does something he might not have appreciated: it tests the claim against biology, neuroscience, existential philosophy, political history, and the looming age of artificial intelligence.

What if nobody has to win the argument about how society should be organized? In the nineteenth century, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon shocked the world by declaring that property is theft—and then, rather cheerfully, proposed that people could get along just fine without governments telling them what to do. He was mocked, attacked, imprisoned, and largely misunderstood. He also happened to be onto something.

Max Weber gave the modern world its sharpest mirror. He named the iron cage of bureaucracy, traced the ghostly afterlife of Calvinist anxiety inside the modern office, and showed how rational systems can run perfectly while the people inside them quietly come apart. His vocabulary still saturates the way educated people talk about authority, capitalism, and disenchantment. Yet for all his brilliance, Weber kept his attention on the structures, the institutions, the historical patterns.

Most people, when they hear the word anarchy, picture a window being broken. This is unfortunate, because the word was meant to describe something quite different—a society without rulers, not a society without order. The two are easily confused only by those who suspect, in their hearts, that without a uniformed person standing nearby they would immediately bite their neighbor. There is an idea that has never died—only changed its costume. In the Victorian era it wore a frock coat and spoke of civilization. In the twentieth century it wore a uniform and spoke of race. Today it wears a hoodie and speaks of disruption. The idea is this: that life is fundamentally a competition, that the strong deserve to win, and that science—nature itself—has given us permission to stop feeling bad about it.
