I due parlano a lungo: Mercedes non odia l'uomo che ha davanti, anzi rimprovera sé stessa per le scelte sbagliate che ha fatto. Le strade dei due, un tempo giovani e felicemente innamorati, si dividono per sempre. La morte inaspettata di Édouard, il figlio di Villefort, fa però sorgere in Edmond dei dubbi sulla sua opera di 'giustiziere divino'.
