For as long as I can remember, Ansel has been my protector. In middle school, he was the tall, strong, boy who kept my bullies at bay. When I got the first letter from my secret admirer, I was flattered. With the second, I grew intrigued. By the third, I’m starting to fall in love with him. I wish that I could meet him in person, but I don’t know how to arrange that.

I made a mistake buying this house. It needs work, more than I am capable of, and I can’t afford to hire anyone. I figure that I’m screwed… until my neighbor offers me a deal. He’ll do the renovations, if I pretend to be his girlfriend for Thanksgiving with his family.

I need a break. I’ve spent this last year working hard to get my business off the ground and to settle into my new apartment and town. All work and no play though has made me a dull girl. Now I’m looking to change that and I know just how to do it. With Ryder Murray.

Not with my brother halfway around the world and no other living family to rely on. Then I run into Koa, and suddenly things seem to be looking up for me.

I needed a miracle. What I got was a cocky, late-as-hell comedian with too many jokes and a smile that could ruin lives. Sharing a cross-country road trip with Anthony Bronson wasn’t part of my five-year plan, but when a once-in-a-lifetime job interview lands on the opposite coast and my bank account laughs in my face, desperate times call for cocky measures. He’s messy where I’m meticulous. Loud where I’m quiet. And somehow, in between pit stops, comedy clubs, and too many shared hotel beds… he starts to feel like home. This was supposed to be a ride. Just a ride.

It’s just a bet… right? Blake: It all started with a harmless bet. I was bored, and there he was—Luca Wright, the new guy in town and the only other person in the diner. So, I challenged him to a race: who could finish their meal first. I won, he paid for my food, and from there, we’ve bet on pretty much everything—Who could finish the hike first, who could make a better meal, who could fit the most marshmallows in their mouths. It’s always been a fun competition between us, but this latest bet feels different, like the stakes are higher, and I’m not sure I’m ready for what comes next.

The last thing I remember is being excited to get out of our small hometown with my best friend, Mabel. Then everything went black. I wake up in the hospital with a splitting headache and a strange bite mark on my neck. A bite mark I know I didn’t get in the car accident.

I can’t wait to get out of this freaking town. My friend, Dillon, and I have been social pariahs pretty much our whole lives after an incident when we were kids, and we’re both ready to start over fresh somewhere new. So, as soon as we turn eighteen, we hit the road. Unfortunately for us, we don’t make it very far.
