In this series we explore the many facets of love through literary talents that span both time and country. By a choice of vows each undertakes to stay with the other through the good times and the bad. And most probably there will be plenty of both and much in between. But the union of marriage comes in many shades and hues, some balanced, some destined to last a lifetime and others set to fizzle out or stumble to an ill-mannered conclusion in separation or divorce and, of course, death.

To be a woman is to be half the world’s population but, in many countries, unfortunately still now and for most of history, women were decidedly second class, normally no more than chattels and the bearers and nurturers of children. As society involved into a complex and overlapping system where education and equality begin to seek space things began to change. Iola Leroy is a woman who contains multitudes. Born the light-skinned child of a Mississippi slaveholder, Iola is raised in the belief that she is white - and learns the truth only after her father dies. Iola is then sold into bondage and begins to question certain other lessons of her youth as well. In the midst of widespread discrimination and violence, Iola continually strives to liberate herself from all the forces that would oppress her and is eventually able to embrace her true heritage.
